July 4,2009
Begins: 1:30 PM
Ends: 3:30 PM
The annual Lewes Independence Day Boat Parade will follow the popular "Old Fashioned Fourth of July" games on Second Street.
The Honorable Joseph W. Booth, State Representative, 37th District, will announce the parade from one of the Fisherman's Wharf boats opposite the City Dock in 1812 Park. The boat parade will begin at Roosevelt Inlet at 1:30pm and will wind its way down the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal to Fisherman's Wharf for judging. Expected time of arrival at the City Dock area is 2:00pm. The event is rain or shine.
The patriotic theme will be exhibited through the boats' decorations and the boat owners' holiday attire. The Grand Prize winner will receive a custom-designed, carved trophy made by parade committee member Bert Long, a well-known local artisan who specializes in wood caricatures. First, Second and Third prize ribbons also will be awarded.
To be eligible for a prize, the vessel must be registered by 10 am on Saturday, July 4. Registration forms are available now at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center in the Fisher-Martin House located next to the Zwaanendael Museum (facing Kings Highway), Lewes Harbor Bait & Tackle at the end of Anglers Road (next to Irish Eyes), Ole Salt Bait and Tackle Show on New Road or at Pilottown Marina on Pilottown Road. Boats not registered by 10 am on July 4 are invited to join the parade by arriving at Roosevelt Inlet by 1:00 pm and follow the numbered boat entries. All boats will be monitoring Marine Channel 65 and MUST COMPLY WITH COAST GUARD STANDARDS FOR SAFE BOATING. There is no charge to participate.
The awards ceremony will take place on the deck of the Lightship Overfalls at approximately 3:30 pm.
