Lewes Historical Society Summer Craft Fair

Location: Lewes Historical Society Complex

July 10,2010

This well attended, juried craft fair is held every July and October at the Historical Complex at Second & Shipcarpenter Streets, just one block from downtown Lewes.  The show will be open from 9am until 4pm with a $5 admission fee benefiting educational and preservation programs at The Lewes Historical Society.  A rain date is scheduled for Sunday, July 11.

This summer’s show will feature new and returning artists from across Delmarva and the tri-state area.  As you wander through the show, take time to talk with the individual artist about their craft.  They will be delighted to share their techniques used in creating their one of a kind works of art.

Awarding winning basket weaver, Beatrice ‘Bea’ Whitehead is the featured artist for the summer craft fair. Bea’s highly collectable baskets are one of a kind and made from organic materials gathered both locally and around the world.  She resides in Milford, Delaware, where she grows her own gourds in her garden.  The gourds are dried, hollowed, carved and shaped into baskets.  Her hand woven baskets and gourds are embellished with found organic materials such as shed antlers, vines, dried seed pods, and shells.

Delaware artists returning to the show this year include Marilyn Nugent, Charles Smith and Patricia Marshall. Nugent creates glass bead jewelry in her Lewes studio.  Smith of Wood N Things will have puzzles, toys and games for both children and adults. Marshall will have her colorful floral arts.

Come spend the day and have lunch in the beautiful park of the shaded Historic Complex.   See the art work of the fine craftsmen of Delaware and the Eastern Shore and listen to live bluegrass music, performed by the band New and Used Bluegrass. Returning chef DK of Shawnee Country Club will be cooking pulled pork, beef brisket, and fresh tuna sandwiches.  The Village Improvement Association will be returning with a delectable assortment of homemade baked goods.  For more information contact The Lewes Historical Society at 302-645-7670 or visit historiclewes.org on the web.
