Also known as "sailors' bracelets" or "surfers' bracelets," these woven rope bracelets have been worn by mariners for ages, including the surfmen of the US Life-Saving Service. If a sailor or surfman found themselves pitched into the water accidentally, a rescuer could grab such a bracelet with a boat hook and haul the unfortunate person to safety.
Staff from the Delaware Seashore State Park will provide the rope and instruction for you to make your own! Once you learn how, you can make them for friends and sweethearts as a one-of-a-kind handmade gift.
