Prickly Pear Trail Hike

Spring can be one of the best times to explore the outdoor wonders of coastal Delaware. Migratory animals are beginning to return, the air is clean and crisp, and you can see the newly awakening plants! The staff at Delaware Seashore State Park is offering a guided hike of the Prickly Pear Trail which is located within the Fresh Pond Tract. This piece of state park land, located just east of Ocean View, is comprised of over 700 acres of upland forest, meadows, and marshes. Delaware Seashore State Park acquired this land in the 1990s, which brought the last piece of undeveloped land in eastern Sussex County under state open-space protection.
The Prickly Pear Trail is over 3 miles long and is mostly flat, dry land. Participants will have the opportunity to explore both upland forest and meadow habitats, looking for signs left by the resident deer, fox, owls and other creatures that call this area home. The trail also includes a short spur that leads park visitors to the south shore of Indian River Bay. This is a great place to view birdlife wading in the marsh, padding in the water, and soaring in the sky above.
The cost is $4 per person and pre-registration is required. Please dress for the weather.
