When the REBEL Baroque Ensemble performs, critics rave: “Sophisticated and Beguiling” (The New York Times). “Astonishingly vital music-making” (The Los Angeles Times). “A welcome sense of style and vibrant interpretations” (The Washington Post). “Virtuosity and Joy” (The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette). Based in New York and familiar to many Public Radio listeners because of its numerous on-air appearances, the five-member ensemble (two violins, recorder/transverse, cello/viola da gamba and harpsichord/organ) has become one of today’s premier period-instrument groups. Taking a cue from their namesake, Jean-Féry Rebel, a boldly inventive French Baroque composer, the members of REBEL are known for their provocative approach to the repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries. They favor a highly expressive, virtuosic, hold-nothing-back style of playing. Look for musical sparks to fly when REBEL (accent on the second syllable) takes the stage at Coastal Concerts.
