There's no mistaking it - the mercury in the thermometer has risen, the traffic on Route 1 has intensified and the amount of clothing being worn on or near the beach has diminished. It's summertime 2013 in Southern Delaware, the busiest time of year along the 26 miles of Atlantic coastline that comprise the most wondrous part of the nation's First State.
Officials with the Freeman Stage at Bayside offiically announced last week its lineup for the 2013 summer season - and what a lineup it is!
Headlining this year's entertainment calendar are big name acts like Pat Benator, Darius Rucker, Sheryl Crow, Lyle Lovett and Michael McDonald, with tons of tribute bands, family entertainment and other acts rounding out the rest of the season.
In a packed house on Monday, Jan. 7, Sen. Thomas R. Carper, Delaware's senior United States senator and a former governor of the First State, walked to the podium and uttered two words that simply said it all - "Play Ball!"
And with that, the announcement was made that Little League International had awarded southern Delaware with a second World Series event, to be played this August at the Lower Sussex Little League Complex in tiny Roxana, Del.
We have tons of great festivals every year in Southern Delaware, each one unique in its own way. But the tradition that is the Sussex County Return Day celebration stands out for many reasons, both for its uniqueness, as well as the underlying spirit that exemplifies this very special day in the First State!
Well, it's autumn here in beautiful southern Delaware and those of you familiar with the area know that means one thing - it's time for some of the country's greatest and most enjoyable fall festivals!
I am very fortunate to have a job where I can help promote my favorite area of the country, visiting our local beaches, entertaining journalists from all throughout the mid-Atlantic and writing about our tourist attractions and some of my favorite spots. Many of my writings will soon be posted here on this section of our new Website, but I also welcome my friends in the media who have written about southern Delaware to submit their stories for inclusion in our "Press Room."
As summer comes to a close and the crisp breezes of autumn take hold in beautiful southern Delaware, it's time once again for one of my favorite activities of the year - showing our friends in the media all that this beautiful area has to offer. The next familiarizition (FAM) tour of southern Delaware is scheduled for October 21-24 and will be based at the Inn at Canal Square on the picturesque Lewes-Rehoboth Canal.
