RBFS presents "Landline"

LANDLINE OPENING AT THE CINEMA ART THEATER Starting on August 4th the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present LANDLINE, a ribald comedy about a family coming apart at the seams in the by-gone days of mid-nineties Manhattan. From Gillian Robespierre, the director of the indie sleeper hit OBVIOUS CHILD, comes the story of two sisters (played by Robespierre regular Jenny Slate and newcomer Abby Quinn) navigating the respective pitfalls of young adulthood when the discovery of their father’s infidelity unites them in unlikely ways. For the first time, older sister Dana (Slate), recently engaged and struggling with her own fidelity, finds herself bonding with her wild teenage sister Ali (Quinn) as they try to uncover the truth without tipping off their mother (Edie Falco) and discover the messy reality of love and sex in the process. [2017, USA, Runtime: 1 hour, 36 minutes, Not Rated].
David Ehrlich of “Indiewire.com” calls the film, “a textured, silly, sweet, and deeply felt comedy.” Owen Gleiberman of “Variety” describes Robespierre as “a born filmmaker who thinks in three dimensions and stages scenes with a perky humanity”, and praises star Slate’s “emotional vibrance,” playing a character, “who feels compelled to test out her happiness, to poke and prod it, because if she didn’t she’d think she was copping out.” Come for the nostalgia for a time you didn’t know you missed yet (payphones and floppy-discs play key roles in the plot). Stay for the honest depiction of family strife, leavened with the crass humor of young women growing up and testing their boundaries.
